The punk rock will get you if the government don’t get you first
So folks- another day, another week. I just wanted to take a minute to espouse the greatness of Kinky Friedman. I had the opportunity to see him in Fort Worth last week and all I have to say is "Why the hell not?!?"
I want to say "Adios, MoFo" to Rick Perry; I’m surely not going to deign to vote for him- I mean really- can you tell me what he has done in office the past 6 years? I think the only thing to say about Perry is that he has better spindoctors than former governor and current pres. Bush. Though Perry certainly has managed to foul up his time in office his media mavens have managed to hide his stupidity behind a pretty face and a photo op. If only Bush could be so lucky.
Carole Keeton McClellan/Rylander/Strayhorn/whatever her name is this week; the Republican running on the Independent ticket- has she no soul? I’ll let you judge for yourself on an interesting factoid- her son is Scott McClellan, you know, the former press secretary for Pres. Bush… What bugs me about Strayhorn is that despite the fact that I’m certainly all for a strong female leader in the gubernatorial race or even in the presidential race I think that Strayhorn is headline mongering and offers nothing more than blatant criticism of members of her own Republican party. What I find really interesting is that nowhere on her gubernatorial race website does it mention her opinions and what she intends to do in office. There are certainly news clips in which she rails on Perry’s border control and tax cuts but she never takes a stand for what she believes because then she would lose the support of her own party.
Sadly enough there is nothing to say about Chris Bell simply because no one knows who the hell he is due to the Democratic party being a laughingstock in Texas. Unfortunately, with a weak party backing Bell, someone who actually has some good ideas and takes a stand on issues won’t even have a chance because of our broken political system.
And finally we come to Kinky. A breath of fresh air. I won’t pretend to agree with all of his reforms and issues but I think it’s about time to shake up politics both statewide and nationwide. For once a political candidate is not looking to line the pockets of his campaign contributors, Kinky’s #1 reason to vote for him is "My Only Special Interest Group Is The People of Texas." (Though I will say that Bell has a tough stance on campaign finance ethics and reform).
So take a minute and think about what is at stake here; sure the Texas governor has weak political power, the framers of the Texas Constitution must have been pretty politically astute not to trust the Texas governor to act with restraint. With more gubernatorial power I would like to think we would probably be our own country by now; it’s that kind of thinking that Texas forefathers probably wanted to rein in and stomp out…. But the position is a stepping stone into the national political arena and currently Perry is limited in political power to only harm one state. Do you really want to see him wreck havoc on the entire nation as vice president or god-forbid, president?
