Another Month of Moral Indignation and Awareness
Apparently November is American Indian Heritage Month as well as National Adoption Month, National Novel Writing Month, National Blog Posting Month, Epilepsy Awareness Month, American Diabetic Eye Disease Month and National Diabetes Month, Aviation History Month, Child Safety and Protection Month, Good Nutrition Month, International Creative Child and Adult Month, National Raisin Bread Month, International Drum Month, Jewish Book Month, National Alzheimer’s Disease Month, National Hospice Month, National Stamp Collecting Month, One Nation Under God Month, Peanut Butter Lover’s Month, National Christmas Seal Month, National Pepper Month, and Real Jewelry Month. To top it off, the last week of the month is National Home Care Week, Make up Your Own Week Week, and National Cookie Week.
But my favorite is a toss up between National Slaughter Month and National Moral Indignation Month. Such a contradiction all within the same month! And could someone please explain to me what exactly One Nation Under God month actually does? Other than incite terrorists to hate us even more, that is… Could we please institute a Religious Tolerance Month instead?
I understand why NaNoWriMo and NaBloPoMo are popular- they actually incite people to get off their asses and motivate them to do something during the month. I even understand why we need an American Indian Heritage Month. Due simply to the fact that if we didn’t celebrate American Indian History then the U.S. school systems would not focus on the contributions of these individuals. Unfortunately, due to this broken mess we are forced to institute similar months such as Black History Month, etc. to ensure that students learn about these contributions at some point during the school year.
However, I don’t understand why we need to designate a month or even a week to Peanut Butter Lovers, Peppers, Cookies, Raisin Bread, Home Care, Drums, Jewish Books, Stamps, or Jewelry. This seems like an insidious plot by marketing industries to push consumers to buy these items during this particular month to create an inflation in sales. It’s almost as bad as creating a Peanut Butter Lovers holiday card to send out to all of your Peanut Butter loving friends.
